In the 1960s, the magnificent medieval city center was in danger of falling into ruin, but was saved and renovated thanks to the Minister of Culture at the time, André Malraux. Today, this medieval city center is one of the most homogeneous in France. It is sometimes used by filmmakers who are looking for a perfectly authentic setting to shoot period films.
There are many ways to visit this marvelous city: you can visit Sarlat in the traditional way, in a group with a guide, in the form of a travel diary, in a theatrical visit (in costume), in a storytelling stroll, or even in a visit with children. In the summer, artists take possession of the shady streets or sunny squares of Sarlat to offer you street entertainment. These lively shows will delight young and old alike. One cannot talk about Perigord gastronomy without mentioning foie gras, of which Perigord is the first producing region in France. Whether it comes from goose or duck, make sure you buy an authentic local product! The stalls of the markets in Sarlat also offer delicious duck breast: a treat for the taste buds. We must also mention the succulent regional truffles, the Perigord salad, or the good wine. We advise you in particular the bottles coming from the vineyard of Bergerac.

Your experience in Sarlat would not be complete without visiting some of the many markets that take place there throughout the year. First of all, we can mention the traditional open-air market of Sarlat, which offers local products in all seasons: walnuts, Sarlat apples, cabécou, ceps… The traditional market takes place on Wednesday mornings and Saturdays (all day) in the heart of the magnificent medieval city center.
For the more ecologically minded, the organic market takes place on Thursday late afternoon on the Place de la Poste. Let yourself be seduced by local and responsible fruits and vegetables, especially the delicious Perigord strawberries. There is also the covered market of Sarlat, which takes place behind the door of the old church Sainte-Marie. Come and taste the local products in an unusual and beautiful setting. Finally, let’s not forget the truffle market in January!
