Discover Beynac and Cazenac from our 4 star campsite in Dordogne

In the past, Beynac-et-Cazenac‘s geographical location, overlooking the Dordogne, allowed the town’s defenders to keep an eye on the regional traffic routes. Today, Beynac offers a breathtaking view of the Vézère valley, renowned for its prehistoric remains. Make a detour to visit these cavities dug in the rock that testify to a whole new era.

To continue your visit, you can opt for a ride on a “gabarres”, a traditional boat of the region. Let yourself be carried along the waters of the peaceful Dordogne and take a well-deserved break.

Only 20 minutes from the Moulin de Paulhiac campsite ****, cross the ages and encounter the history of the Périgord.

What to do in Beynac-et-Cazenac?

The
Medieval village of Beynac

The charming medieval village of Beynac is full of activities for vacationers with a passion for history and nature. We have already mentioned the castle of Beynac, a jewel of the medieval architecture of the 12th century. Classified as a historical monument in 1944, the rock carved castle peacefully overlooks the magnificent waters of the Dordogne.

During the Hundred Years’ War, it was a strategic stronghold for the French, who were suspicious of the English stationed at Castelnaud. Indeed, the two castles, now so close, were rivals in those days. But many years have passed since then, and the Château de Beynac has been gradually transformed according to the architectural desires of each century. Today, you can admire a magnificent Renaissance staircase (Florentine style), the State Hall, the furnished room of the XVII century (decorated with authentic armors and tapestries), or the old kitchens of the XII century.

Moreover, the medieval elements of the castle have been so well preserved that Beynac has been used as a set for several films, including Les Visiteurs, La Fille de d’Artagnan, and even Luc Besson’s Joan of Arc.

The
Outdoor activities in Beynac

Beynac-et-Cazenac also offers outdoor activities. We have already mentioned the barges, which promise you an unforgettable afternoon on the waters of the Dordogne. Following the course of the latter, you will reach the Vézère and its valley populated with prehistoric remains.

We can notably evoke the Rouffignac cave, the “cave of a hundred mammoths“, and its galleries of 8 kilometers long representing more than 250 animals. This cave is particularly famous for the magnificent paintings of mammoths that it offers. In fact, contrary to a persistent popular belief, mammoths were not very well represented by our ancestors. We can also mention the caves of Tourtoirac, Villars, Proumeyssac, Domme, or Grand Roc.
